The Mouseion
"The Mouseion is also part of the royal palaces [in Alexandria]; it has
a public walk, an exedra with seats and a large house in which is the
common mess hall of the men of learning who share the Mouseion. This
group of men not only hold common property but also have a priest in
charge of the Mouseion, who formerly was appointed by the kings but is
now appointed by Caesar." - Strabo 17.8
The Muses accompanied Osiris in his journeys
"For Osiris was
laughter-loving and fond of music and the dance; consequently he took
with him a multitude of musicians, among whom were nine maidens who
could sing and were trained in the other arts, these maidens being
those who among the Greeks are called the Muses." - Diodorus Siculus
1.18
Ptolemy establishes a festival for the Muses
"Ptolemy,
actuated by zeal and great desire for the furtherance of learning,
collected with no less care, a similar library for the same purpose at
Alexandria, about the same period. When by dint of great labour he had
completed it, he was not satisfied, unless, like the seed of the earth,
it was to go on increasing. He therefore instituted games to the Muses
and Apollo, and in imitation of those in which wrestlers contended, he
decreed rewards and honors to the victorious in literature." -
Vetruvius, On Architecture 7.4
