MOUSEION

The Mouseion of Alexandria, founded by either the first or second Ptolemy, was the most famous center of learning in the ancient world after Athens, which it shortly came to eclipse. It housed the equally famous Bibliotheca or Library which contained as many as a million scrolls by some estimates. In the hallowed halls of the Mouseion scholars from all parts of the Greek world and beyond walked, debated, and made incredible scientific discoveries in fields as diverse as astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, geography, history, art, science, literature, and medicine. The last head of the Mouseion was the mathematician Theon, whose daughter was the famed scholar and head of the Platonic academy in Alexandria Hypatia. Revered as much for her wisdom as for her beauty, her independent spirit drew the wrathful indignation of the Bishop Cyril who insighted a mob against her, ordering them to strip her naked in the street and flay her alive with potsherds. Her martyrdom symbolised the end of Alexandria's glorious reign as teacher of the world and protector of its accumulated wisdom.

But the brilliance of that institution is with us today. In our Mouseion you will find articles on history, philosophy, society and other fields of interest to modern Greco-Egyptian syncreticists, which provide the background and cultural context for our developing religious tradition.
