Excerpts from The Histories

Herodotus

Apollon and Artemis were children of Dionysos and Isis, and Leto was made their nurse and preserver; in Egyptian, Apollon is Horus, Demeter Isis, Artemis Bubastis. – 2.156

The Egyptians hold solemn assemblies not once a year, but often. The principal one of these and the most enthusiastically celebrated is that in honor of Artemis at the town of Boubastis. – 2.59.1

Boubastis where there is also a temple of Boubastis … Boubastis is, in the Greek language, Artemis. – 2.137

Bouto is the name of the city where this oracle is; I have already mentioned it. In Bouto there is a temple of Apollon and Artemis. The shrine of Leto where the oracle is. – 2.155

Apollon and Artemis were, they say, children of Dionysos and Isis, and Leto was made their nurse and preserver; in Egyptian, Apollon is Horus, Demeter Isis, Artemis Boubastis. It was from this legend and no other that Aiskhylos son of Euphorion took a notion which is in no poet before him: that Artemis was the daughter of Demeter. – 2.156
