P Sufenas Virius Lupus
From the deepest well within the earth
a light stirs in silent waters,
at times as still as conception,
in turns like a horse at full gallop.
The waters run, boil, overflow
making rivers, lakes, oceans,
laying cities to waste and ruin,
to some giving health and insight.
The trident, three teeth sinking
into the flesh offered from below
where fundaments of stone and soil
quake with convulsive tremors.
In all of these he is there,
grandson of heaven, nephew of titans,
Salacia’s spouse of the brine,
Venilia’s estuarine husband.
